Modes of Transport in My Community

With the growth of civilization the modes of transport have been changing. The nomadic man depended hardly on his legs for transport. Later on when he domesticated animals he used beasts of burden lick the ox, the mule, the donkey, the horse, the camel and so on for his transport. These animals formed part of man’s household. With the coming of the cart, transport became somewhat quicker Chariots became famous later on. Various types of chariots were the fashion till the coming of the steam engine by the turn of the last century or at the beginning of this century the petrol driven motor cars became fashionable. All along boats and ships were there; in fact the ship has been there for thousands of years. The coming of the aero plane into the scene is quite recent. Already we have entered the supersonic era. One is not sure whether man will dare use the rockets for long distance travel.

As society grows more complex and with the fast growth of towns and cities there is a crying need for a variety of transport. On the one hand it must be cheap and at the other it must be fast. Commuters use the train, the tube, buses, and tram cars where they are available. Individuals may use bicycles and indeed it is the poor man's friend.

Speaking particularly of transport in my locality, first there are the town buses. They are cheap and quick. For a few cents one can travel from one place to another. These are preferred by the office goers and students going to school and colleges. Even petty vendors going early to the market find these buses very helpful.

Then there are the auto rickshaws. They are colorful and can go to one’s very door. These light vehicles charge lower fares on the road and are fast enough. There is no question of waiting as for the bus and of course no overcrowding.

Of course there are the bicycles. These light vehicles are very efficient and are easy to maintain. One is independent and can take his own time and go at his own pace. For those who can afford there are the motorcycles and scooters. These vehicles are colorful and fast. But they are to be handled deftly lest one should become the victim of a road accident.

There are motorcars and taxis too for those who can afford it. They are very useful when one needs a quick transport and when a few persons have to travel with luggage. Since in many places these taxis have meters attached to them, the hire may be easily seen. But the driver always has his way of higgling for his tips.

For those who can afford there are the modem limousines with their chic and streamlined bodies. Since roads are good it is a pleasure to travel in one’s own car.

Long distance travellers use the trains and aero planes. In our streams, steam boats are very popular both for passenger transport and goods transport. Instead of steam, boats use diesel engines.
