Before actually speaking about dress making let me mention some useful pastimes. For a person with literary bent of mind, reading may be a pastime. Some draw and paint. In the case of women folk knitting and sewing have been traditional pastimes. For those with nature trekking and pioneering are good. But those with nerve and verve swimming has a great attraction. Whatever may be the pastime the general aim is pleasure and not money making. But if the mastering of a pastime means a vocation there is nothing wrong.
Dress making is a traditional pastime. Before the professional tailor came, every housewife was making dress for the members of her family. The needle craft is one of the most ancient ones. But with the advance of the times, dress making has become very sophisticated.
Basically, cotton, wool and silk were the materials. But nowadays synthetic materials are good contenders and are trying to push out cotton and silk. Weaving and the synthetic colours are adding to variety. Then the sewing machine has made dress making quick and easy. Fancy stitching has become possible. Embroidering which was once the preserve of the women has been taken up by the machine. With the advent of the machine, dresses are made on a large scale many of the operations being done by the machine.
There is a lot of aesthetics that go into the making of a dress. Each country has its own peculiar dress. For instance Kimono of the Japanese has become world famous. Tastes change with generations. What was once fashionable in Victorian England is no more so. Men’s, women’s and children s dresses have undergone a change.
Nowadays dress making has become almost a science. There are great designers in large countries and very often they set the fashion.
Dress making as a pastime is good. In a family it will help save a lot of money given otherwise to die tailor as charges. The simple processes like cut ting, button holing hemming and so on could be learnt with some practice. Cutting is a very important part of dress making. Beginners model it on paper before actually cutting cloth. Of course, dress making as a pastime is different from dress making as a profession. But the pastime may lead to professionalism. In fact, good tailors make a lot of money in cities. With the ready made market having come to stay, dress making has become a profitable job.
